The Kindle Fire and second-generation Kindle Reader include native support for PDF files, but to view these files on a first-generation Kindle Reader, you must convert them to MOBI or AZW format.
I was thinking of getting the second edition of "How Linux Works" in electronic format so that I could do stuff on my desktop computer as I'm reading the book. I'd be buying the Amazon kindle edition.
