By contrast, The Princess Bride hardly looks out of place next to Home Alone, a Christmas comedy directed by Chris Columbus that superficially bears no resemblance to Reiner’s romantic adventure. What they share is a warmth and sense of mischievousness, both of which make the importance of family unambiguously clear by the time the credits roll.

The Lord of the Rings is one of the definitive fantasy franchises of all time, but The Princess Bride has far better sword fights.
