The Lego Smart Brick incorporates a silicon chip, copper coils, LEDs and a speaker, and is capable of reacting when it is placed next to other bricks and minifigures.

Lego has officially announced a new 2x4 "smart brick" at CES 2026 this week. It's apparently the "most significant evolution" in the Lego system since the release of the Minifigure in 1978 and is part of the company's "smart play" initiatives.

Fortunately, Lego didn’t just drop an idea, call it a day, and leave fans waiting. The company has already announced the first three “All-in-One” LEGO Star Wars sets range from 473 to 962 pieces, each including at least one Smart Brick, a number of Smart Tags, and Smart Minifigures to unlock interactive features.

The Lego Group has unveiled its Smart Play system, which uses “Smart Bricks” and “Smart Tags” to bring Lego sets to life. The Smart Bricks are powered by a custom ASIC chip that is smaller than one standard Lego stud and is highly specialised for the features of the Lego Smart Play system.
